چکیده
A. Introduction This note discusses some of the theoretical issues relevant for the determination of quark masses, which are fundamental parameters of the Standard Model of particle physics. Unlike the leptons, quarks are confined inside hadrons and are not observed as physical particles. Quark masses therefore cannot be measured directly, but must be determined indirectly through their influence on hadronic properties. Although one often speaks loosely of quark masses as one would of the mass of the electron or muon, any quantitative statement about the value of a quark mass must make careful reference to the particular theoretical framework that is used to define it. It is important to keep this scheme dependence in mind when using the quark mass values tabulated in the data listings. Historically, the first determinations of quark masses were performed using quark models. The resulting masses only make sense in the limited context of a particular quark model, and cannot be related to the quark mass parameters of the Standard Model. In order to discuss quark masses at a fundamental level, definitions based on quantum field theory be used, and the purpose of this note is to discuss these definitions and the corresponding determinations of the values of the masses.

Magnetic Moments, Hadron Masses, and Quark Masses
Two independent quark-model predictions of the A magnetic moments, in agreement with one another and with experiment to 1%, are obtained by using two different inputs for SU(3) breaking in quark masses: (1) (m, /m„) =(Mq. —Mq)/(M~-Mn); and (2) m, —ni„ =M p, —Mz. I discuss the implications of the surprising sucess of a description of quark magnetic moments as Dirac moments with quark masses rela...
متن کاملQuark mass dependence of pseudo-scalar masses and coupling constants
The dependence of pseudo-scalar masses and decay constants on the sea and valence quark masses is investigated in the pseudo-Goldstone boson sector of QCD with two light quark flavours. The sea quark masses are at present in the range 1 3 ms ≤ mud ≤ 2 3 ms whereas the valence quark masses satisfy 1 2 msea ≤ mval ≤ 2msea. The values of the Gasser-Leutwyler low energy constants L4, L5, L6 and L8 ...
متن کاملTwo Remarks Concerning the Signs of the Light Quark Masses
Partial conservation of the nine axial currents Aμ for β = 0, 1, ..., 8 applied to the vacuum expectation values of the equal-time commutators of the nine axial charges QA(x0) for α = 0, 1, ..., 8 with the corresponding axial current divergences ∂Aμ implies that the non-vanishing current quark masses mu, md, ms of the light quarks u, d, s have the same sign. Under the more realistic assumption ...

We present results for the light quark masses for the Wilson quark action obtained with the PCAC relation for the one-link extended axial vector current in quenched QCD at β = 5.9 − 6.5. This method leads to a remarkable improvement of scaling behavior of the light quark masses compared to the conventional method. We obtain m l = 3.87(37)MeV for the averaged up and down quark mass and ms = 97(9...
متن کاملAn Interesting Fitting Formula of Quark Masses
We show an interesting empirical formula of quark masses here, which is found by implementing a least squares fit. In this formula the measured QCD coupling is almost a ”best fitting coupling”. There are many papers working on the masses of quarks, in theory or in experiment. For theory, the difficulty is, masses of quarks can not been determined by first principle. The masses of known six quar...
